Psychiatry and psychotherapy

Psychiatry is a branch of medicine that deals with the prevention, evaluation, diagnosis, treatment and recovery of mental illness. Psychiatry adopts a medical approach but needs to consider biological, psychological and socio-cultural aspects. Medication has greater efficacy when combined with different forms of psychotherapy. Most mental illnesses have a chronic evolution, which has a significant impact on patients’ quality of life and even on their life expectancy.

Psychiatric disorders can be grouped into: affective disorders (major depression, bipolar disorder), cognitive impairment (multi-infarct dementia, Alzheimer’s dementia, delirium), anxiety disorders (panic attacks, obsessive-compulsive disorder), personality disorders, psychotic disorders (schizophrenia), substance addiction (drugs, alcohol, tobacco).

Psychotherapy is an interpersonal, relational intervention used to help patients alleviate their problems, respectively, to enhance their individual well-being and to reduce their subjective discomfort. Most forms of psychotherapy use only conversation as a method, but writing, drama, art can also be used.
